Huracán Mitch:
Noticias de Rio Dulce. 4 de Noviembre 1998
UPDATE Wednesday 4, Nov98 09:00 CST
Well, it seems that "Mitch" is not finished with us yet. It
appears to be spinning up again and is headed for Florida
but not before dumping another load of rain on us last
night. The river has risen another inch and is now about 1
inch short of coming over the floor of Bruno's restaurant
although the docks are still 8 inches above water.
The worry here now is that the river will come even higher.
The river level is not really driven by local rainfall but
by rainfall up in the highlands around Lago Izabal and
behind El Estor and in Alta Verapaz. As the day progresses
we'll see what happens.
We have reports saying that temporary bridges are being
installed and that the road to Guatemala City will be open
to limited traffic later today.
The gasoline stations are indeed pumping gas since we get
our shipments directly from Puerto Barrios and that road has
been open since Saturday. The rumors about gasoline
shortages were false.
Taca/INTER is running flights to and from Guatemala City as
is Russell (both, weather permitting).
