When taking office, President Alvaro Arzú declared: "To eliminate privileges is an indispensable measure in the way to equal opportunities for all". Such assert deserves the highest consideration, taking into account that eliminating privileges can involve fiscal, administrative and decentralization measures, as well as economic policies as those related to trade and industry. All these are issues (see our cover story) are of great interest, not to mention social and political effects of fully complying this compromise (for extended information see Privilege: a word in search of content by Marcos Ibargüen).
The Management Association of Guatemala (AGG, for its abbreviation in Spanish) organized on February 21, a Round Table called "The Economic and Financial Policies for 1996", in which the Government's Economic Cabinet and acknowledged representatives of this sector took part. In regard to this event, Julio Asencio offers a Point of View which questions the public official's focus about the ways to solve the so called "Monetary Bomb" and other similar emergencies.
Fundazucar, considered the social branch of the sugar producing sector in the South Coast of Guatemala intends to become an effective development role model which can be adopted by other private sector groups, since it has built a solid Corporate Strategy.
