Which of These Is Your Management Style?

It is hard, and somewhat baffling, to label human conduct. Nevertheless, managerial evaluation is a key function in any business; fun, maybe, but also lethally serious.

The first way to improve an organization's performance is to discover what its managers are really like. There is a simple classification system, by which everyone can be assessed. The point is to identify the eight diferent managerial styles, based on three main characteristics:

* Orientation towards the task: the quality of wanting to see a job finished
* Orientation towards relationships: the quality of caring mostly about people
* Effectiveness: the ability of achieving high productivity

Based on the characteristics that are displayed by a manager, the eight managerial styles may be defined:

1. The Deserter: displays none, or just a tinge, of these three characteristics
2. The Bureaucrat: only displays effectiveness
3. The Missionary: only displays orientation towards relationships
4. The Promoter: displays effectiveness as well as orientation towards relationships
5. The Autocrat: only displays orientation towards the task
6. The Benevolent Autocrat: displays effectiveness as well as orientation towards the task
7. The one with Transaction: displays orientation towards the task as well as orientation towards relationships
8. The Executive: displays all three characteristics
