Refigua: How to Chill the World Without Overheating It

Refrigua (Refrigerators of Guatemala) was the first company to build refrigeration equipment in Latin America. It began in 1967, when Jacobo Tefel established a joint venture with the Fogel Commercial Refrigerator Company, in Nicaragua. When the sandinistas arrived, Tefel migrated to Guatemala.

The growth this company has experienced is amazing. It presently exports to Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, the Caribbean, and the United States. Its success in the export business was such, that it received an award for being the "Best Manufactory Exporter" and "Best Exporter of the Year".

What really positions Refrigua as a company of global quality is its commitment with the environment. Conscious of the Montreal Protocol, of which Guatemala is a member, which seeks to eliminate the use of freon gas in the cooling equipment, because of its deleterious effect on the ozone layer, it decided to modify its machinery immediately. Refrigua was the first Latin American company to achieve this change.

Jacobo Tefel is conscious of the need to have a mind that is open to change, specially now that technologies change at such an accelerated pace. He states that a businessman must always have an open mind, more so when it comes to geography, for you can no longer think only of the local, protected markets; you must envision all of Latin America as one region.
