CORPORATE STRATEGYTowards the end of 1991, executives at the IBM Corporation promoted projects to improve its operations in several parts of the world. These ideas resulted in the creation of GBM, a multinational corporation that operates in nine countries and has headquarters in seven of them. Presently, GBM works in all of Central America, Panama, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Belize.
Its mission is to offer products and services from the IBM product lines with greater reach, in order to make more comprehensive deals.
During the last decade, studies indicated that there were clients in Central America who were looking for the same things as clients in industrialized countries. That is, that whoever sells and repairs their equipment, knows their company well enough to solve any other information systems problem, as well as offer an integral solution to their technology needs.
The new service line consists of four new units: first, the Network Design and Services unit, to serve local networks; then, the GBNet, which gives counseling, design, and installation services by means of telecommunications; a third unit which gives access to Internet to the business and institutional sectors; and, finally, the Strategic Business Consulting unit, initiated in 1996, which supports organizational development, reengineering, and efficiency programs.
