Flora: Home for 25 Thousand Poinsettias

In San Miguel Dueñas, Sacatepéquez, the tree nursery El Tempixque has covered, during more than twenty years, the local poinsettia demand, and is currently also exporting to Mexico and El Salvador.

Poinsettias require a careful and patient upbringing that extends practically along the whole year, although they are at their peak during the Christmas season.

It was Arturo Falla who, in 1977, started to bring saplings from the United States. Now it is Estuardo, his son, who continues with the family tradition, proud to say that his poinsettias are the prettiest poinsettias in the market.

In El Tempixque, more than 25 thousand poinsettias are grown. Half of them are exported, and the remaining 50% are distributed through Flora, their local sales outlet, or by other tree nurseries and minor distributors.

The experience they have accumulated throughout these years has taught them how and when to care for the plants, which guarantees Guatemalans poinsettias that will last after December, with their characteristic colors. For this, every plant is cared for individually to determine its need for water, fertilizer, heat, and light/hours.

Falla affirms that El Tempixque does not improvise, reason why they can guarantee poinsettias that will endure until much later than the Christmas season…
