"We Create Our Own Future:" The Story of a Real Guatemalan Entrepreneur

In 1960, José René Menéndez Martínez began his first formal business: René Menéndez and Company. There, he produced several foods, including chips, snacks, french fries, pork grinders, and others. In 1975, he went on a new venture, with the factory ˇYa Está!, whose first products included dehydrated black beans. It then diversified into the production of flours, orgeat, salt, and sugar packets for restaurants and hotels.

The products are sold in Guatemala and El Salvador, by means of his own distribution companies. His quality and dedication have been worth it, for among the company's institutional clients are Kellogg's of Guatemala, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and the best hotels in Guatemala.

During the last decade, a new stage began, when he started looking for other markets to export to. He began selling frozen fruit in the United States. Now, the product line includes unique products such as hot chili peppers, baby corn, tender palms, jocote fruit, and other products oriented towards the Latin market in the United States.

The company's production has grown in all of its lines, at an average of 20% per year. 98% of bottled and frozen products are exported, and the rest are sold locally. The rest of the product line is sold mostly in Guatemala and El Salvador, exporting only 5% beyond Central America.

According to René Menéndez, his success is based on recognizing the housewives' need for prepared food, ready to be heated and served. Menéndez is proud of his creation, and he keeps looking onward. He has always believed that we create our own future.
