Management by Results

Managers of all times have always been conscious of the cause-effect relationship between executive action and success. The key is to clearly perceive the objectives to achieve, and to seek tangible results with tenacity, to obtain the desired final goal.

According to Peter Drucker, author of "The Practice of Management", the manager's job is to achieve an adequate balance between the company's needs and objectives. In order to attain this balance, every manager must establish his departmental objectives, which will contribute towards the global objectives.

Edward Scheh, in his book "Management by Results", brings to light a new version of the concept of management by objectives, which he names "management by results".

Management by results, rather than focusing on what needs to be done, is based on what needs to be achieved. More than activities to be done, he talks of results to be achieved.

Management by results is also a process, that consists of a series of clearly defined and inter-related steps. In summary, they consist of knowing, with precision and in a measurable way, what is to be achieved; defining realistic paths that point, step by step, at what is sought; and having a follow-up mechanism that will detect any deviation, to be able to correct it in time.
