THE ADOPTEE WEBPAGE

...Betcha they're young, betcha they're smart, bet they collect things like ashtrays and art. Betcha they're good - why shouldn't they be? Their one mistake was giving up me.
-excerpt from Maybe(a song from the musical Annie)

My name is Christine Yvette Clark and I am an adoptee. I was adopted as an infant twenty-five years ago in Chicago. Like most other adoptees, I have dealt with the many adoption issues and conflicts throughout my life.

Who am I? Why was I given up? Should I try to find my biological parents? These are just a few of the questions that adoptees deal with. Filling out medical history forms are a constant reminder that your past is a mystery. Adoptees do not know if diabetes or a certain type of cancer runs in their family. They do not know if they are going to pass a certain medical condition to their child.

The purpose of this webpage is to provide resources for adoptees such as support groups, listserves, newsgroups, and other Internet resources. This page may also be helpful for friends and family of adoptees or those just curious about adoption issues. Some people who are not adopted see adoptees who are curious about their birthparents as ungrateful whiners who do not appreciate the parents who raised them. They do not think that adoptees should obsess over their past. Shouldn't everyone have a right to know where they came from? Many people take it for granted that they can trace their family back for several generations. They do not realize how important it is to have a sense of identity.
