Important Adoption Definitions

Uniform Adoption Act(UAA)

This act will make the adoption process easier for prospective parents. That is, the screening process will be less rigorous(little or no pre-counselling of adoptive parents and birthparent(s). This is good for those wanting to adopt but bad for the child.

This act will also make it a felony for anyone to divulge information made confidential during the adoption, even if the information is gathered through legal, public sources.

Reunion Registries

These registries match searching relatives with one another when and/or if both parties register with the particular registry.

Adoption Triad

The adoption triad consists of : the birthparents, adoptee, and adoptive family.

Open Adoption

This type of adoption takes place without an adoption agency. The potential adoptive parents usually find potential birthparents by placing classified ads in the newspaper. This is also called independent or private adoption.

Identified Adoption

In this form of independent adoption the potential adoptive parents and birthparents contact each other and then go to a licensed adoption agency to finish the adoption process.
