THE HOMELESS
ON THE INTERNET

cityscape

The homeless share only one common characteristic: Each one is without a permanent residence. Each one is without an address, a mailbox, a telephone number. Unless it is face-to-face, communication is extremely problematic. The Internet throws open the doors of communication; to receive messages one no longer must be in one predictable physical location. The Internet is a unique place for the homeless to communicate with those who would otherwise be inaccessible to them.

This Web site is designed to provide an easy starting point for those who wish to explore

Internet Access for the Homeless

How Do the Homeless Access the Internet? Although a few community and free nets have recently placed Internet access terminals in homeless shelters, the urban public library still provides the primary access point for the homeless. This page details the joys and concerns involved in the public library's role as equal access provider. Can the public library meet the challenge of leaderership in society's noble struggle to ensure equity on the Information Super Highway?

Internet Resources for the Homeless

What Internet Resources exist for the Homeless? This page provides a gateway to the tremendous number of resources now found on the Internet which are explicitly for the homeless: listservs, newspapers, advocacy groups, local shelters and service providers, and more.
