Talk

Talk (or YTalk) lets you type messages interactively to another person's terminal. All you need to know is the other person's email address:
	talk msmith@rudolph.xmas.com
Try it ;-)

IRC

Internet Relay Chat allows many people to join in on one "channel" to discuss a topic (or several topics at the same time!) You need to run an IRC client on your computer, and use this client to connect to an IRC server. (You can't just telnet to an IRC server!) See also the alt.irc usenet group and the IRC FAQ.

MUD

A MUD is a Multiple User Dimension or Multiple User Dungeon. MOO is a MUD that is Object Oriented. A MUSH is a Multiple User Shared Hallucination. And so on. See Yahoo for a comprehensive list of genres... Most are quite elaborate games. Some claim to be educational. To join, you telnet into a host that is running a MUD/MOO/MUSH program. See also the rec.games.mud.announce group.
