UpLoader Help

UpLoader is a very simple program that lets you transfer files from your local computer to your own directory on our course web server. To use UpLoader you need to register a username and password first. (You may only do this if you are a student in LIS341.)

How to use "UpLoader"

  1. Click here to start the program, or enter its URL: http://www.nortropic.com/lis341/uploader/

  2. Enter your USER and PASSWORD, then click on the Site button. This will display a list of the files you have in your directory. Note that the first time you login your directory will be empty.

  3. To upload a file from your computer to your directory on the server, click on Browse and select the file you need. On a PC, click "OK", on a Mac select "Open"; or double-click on the file. (If you know the location and name of the file you may also type it in.) The full name of the file will appear in the long field. If this is the file you want, click on the UpLoad button. After a few seconds you should see the name of the file displayed in the lower half of your window. Note that the system adds the date and time when the file was last uploaded.

  4. If you wish to delete a file from your directory on the server, type in the name in the field to the left of the Delete button, then click on the button. The file will be deleted from your directory on the server, and after a few seconds, you will see an updated file listing.

  5. To download files from the server, that is, to copy a file that you have stored on the server to your local machine, simply click on the desired file from the listing. Your browser will fetch the file and show it to you. Simply use your browser's Save option to save the file to your local drive.

An Example

  1. Upload the index.html file that you created in Lab 1. Also, upload the peanuts.gif file. Both files should appear in the file listing, since both have now been copied to the Web server.

  2. Now, test your page "live on the Web" by opening your URL from your Web browser. Your URL will look like this:

    http://www.nortropic.com/lis341/userid/

    Where userid is the USER you selected during the registration process.
